First Senior Playground Opened in Texas

By Home Care Assistance, 8:00 am on

The first playground in Texas designed especially for seniors opened on August 14th in Carbide Park in the city of LaMarque, TX. Sponsored by the Galveston County Parks and Senior Services departments, the “Motion Wellness System” is intended to help older adults improve their balance, coordination, flexibility and core strength.

Although LaMarque is quite a ways from us here in Midland, we wanted to share what we found out about this unique playground and what it could mean for the future of seniors in Texas, as well as in the United States. At Home Care Assistance of Denton County, we’re all about educating our readers, seniors and their families!

Senior playgrounds have been growing in popularity in Europe and Asia over the last several years, and they’re beginning to attract attention in the United States. Health advocates and government entities are becoming increasingly aware that these cost-effective wellness systems are needed to keep the country’s aging population healthy and active. Featuring 12 pieces of exercise equipment, the LaMarque facility was installed at a cost of $36,000.

With components like fitness steps, balance beams, stretching boards and low chin-up bars, the playground in LaMarque provides seniors with a safe and fun way to keep fit and maintain their independence. Each piece of exercise equipment also has grab bars to promote overall safety and to help ensure that seniors keep their balance and do not fall.

Proponents of senior playgrounds cite fall prevention as one of the primary goals of the specially designed exercise equipment. Among seniors, falls are the leading cause of injuries. In fact, each year in the United States, one out of every three adults over the age of 65 experiences a fall. Innovative new structures such as the LaMarque senior playground are a great way to help decrease this staggering senior statistic.

Senior-specific playgrounds also offer older adults a welcome alternative to indoor fitness centers, which many find expensive and intimidating. There’s a hope that outdoor senior playgrounds will encourage seniors to socialize with others as well. This is especially important as more senior care professionals emphasize the importance of social ties and meaningful relationships for a higher quality of life.

Seniors treated to a pre-opening trial of the new playground seemed impressed, saying that the playground served as an effective reminder that you’re never too old to play and have fun!
